DISASTER ARTIST: The Weird, But True La La Land Story
Hollywood loves from-rags-to-riches success stories set IN Hollywood. We know this from the wildly popular and successful La La Land which ALMOST won Best Picture. The Disaster Artist is a true success story by those that were completely rejected by The Beast that is the Film Industry. The film that they made on their own (with Tommy’s mysterious millions) is ignorantly awful, but it developed into something more than just a terrible drama. It’s an iconic cult classic that people adore to this day; a film that continues to sell out theaters all over the country. There are not many films like that today.
Aside from the love-letter to the underdogs, The Disaster Artist is a genuine comedy. James Franco COMPLETELY transforms into the weird Tommy Wiseau – accent, long hair, droopy-eye, and all. I felt like The Disaster Artist relied on his accent too much for comedy, but perhaps it wasn’t intentional and was just my audience. I recommend watching The Room so that the true comedy of the The Disaster Artist makes more sense. It touches on the weird dialogue, hilariously absurd sex scenes, and all around chaotic filmmaking processes that The Room is best known for.
